25 Apr 08 Success for Sam

Lymington's 2007 overseas player Sam Raphael had a successful return to Australia over the winter. The popular opening batsman who scored over 500 league runs for Lymington last summer helped his Adelaide Buffaloes club reach the end of season play-offs where they unfortunately lost to eventual champions Woodville in the preliminary final. However, at the end of season awards Sam received the prestigious Talbot Smith Fielding Trophy for being the best fielder in the entire league.

Sam won't be returning to England this summer as he'll be studying hard at university, but you can read all about Sam's time at Lymington in the brand new 2008 club handbook which should be dropping through members' letterboxes any day now. Also in the handbook are articles on Robin Goff, Craig O'Shannessy and the club's bicentenary celebrations, not to mention Larry the Lark's exclusive thoughts on world terrorism and the contents of the New Milton water Tower, and much, much more. 2008 fixture cards and news of a major sponsorship deal for the club should also be arriving with the handbooks.

More contributors needed
With the main writer and contributor to this website otherwise occupied over the past few weeks, the lack of new articles appearing on this website has highlighted the fact that we desperately need new contributors. If you've got anything interesting to report about the club, or any other relevant cricketing matter, please send it to the webmaster Steve Scott at steve.scott@farsite.co.uk. With the new season fast approaching it is imperative that match reports for every club fixture are sent both to this website and the Lymington Times. Naturally the club reserves the right not to publish anything deemed racist, sexist etc.

Rain curtails season opener
Adie Hunt and Neil Trestrail both got their seasons off to a flying start with half centuries before rain cut short Lymington's first match of the season at Bashley. Lymo had reached 141 for 5 from 27 overs when the match was abandoned. Lymington's next pre-season friendly is at South Wilts on Saturday April 26th when newly arrived overseas player Craig O'Shannessy is expected to make his debut.

CraigOverseas player arrives
Lymington are pleased to annouce the arrival of Australian Craig O'Shannessy as their overseas player for 2008. Craig was recommended to the club by former Lymington favourite Tim Smith who is director of cricket at the same Sydney Cricket Club which gave us Karl Whatham and the legendary Pete Smith. Craig is predominantly a pace bowler who bats a bit, and has taken an impressive 90 wickets in the past three seasons in the ultra-competitive Sydney first grade competition. We wish Craig the best of luck in his time with Lymington Cricket Club.

New coach in fine form
Lymington's recently appointed club coach Morgan Rushbrook has begun the season in good form, taking 3 for 52 for his Cardiff UCCE side in their match against Hampshire at the Rose Bowl. Morgan grabbed the wickets of former England batsman John Crawley for 36, plus Chris Tremlett and Liam Dawson as the hosts were restricted to 249 for 8. The students were 10 for 1 in reply before rain halted play.

A cup!First silverware of 2008 for Lymo
An impressive all round display from Christian Pain saw Lymington carry off the New Forest Indoor Knockout Trophy for the first time. They beat Fawley by two wickets in a low scoring final. With the Hunt brothers handicapped by injuries sustained in the semi-final win over Bashley, Lymington did well to restrict holders Fawley to 90 for 5. Pain removed the prolific Andy Parratt courtesy of a fine return catch, and not even a gritty innings from Steve Rice could help the Oilers post anything like a competitive total.

To their credit, Fawley battled back, dismissing Simon Naylor in the first over and soon taking two more wickets. Pain and Marty Hunt stabilised the innings, but when the latter fell in the 10th over, 27 more runs were still required. However, Pain (35 not out) and the hobbling Adie Hunt held their nerve and guided Lymo home with two balls to spare.

The cup win made up for a disappointing conclusion to the league season which saw Lymington finish in fourth place a massive 41 points behind champions New Milton. Ironically, Lymington were the only team to beat Milton all season.

Last chance saloon for Lymo indoors
Lymington's hopes of winning the New Forest Indoor title took a huge knock when they were soundly defeated by Bashley Seconds. Hunt and Barker gave Lymington a decent start, both retiring on 25, but the following batsmen failed to capitalise and the final total of 115 was a little disappointing. Although Hunt removed Lilley early on, it was to be Lymo's only success as Friedman, Taylor and Prince all punished some lacklustre bowling and Bash cruised home to a 5 wicket victory. Lymington now must win their final two matches to stand any chance of taking the title. Their penultimate fixture is against Bashley Firsts on March 2nd at 4pm.

Meanwhile, Lymington Seconds completed their fixtures with a resounding defeat by table toppers Sway. Jim Lowe (27no) was the mainstay of Lymington's disappointing 95 for 3 which was never likely to be enough as Sway reached their target with 9 balls to spare. 16 year old Jacob Leigh bowled well on his indoor debut.

Presentation Evening - time to dig out those dancing shoes!

There will be a change of format this year with the traditional sit down meal and speaker being replaced (for one year only) by a top-notch buffet and disco. Mathematical blunder helps Lymo reach semi-finals
Lymington booked their place in the semi-finals of the New Forest Indoor Cup with a five run win over Paultons. But they were given a mighty scare by Tony Richman who might well have single-handedly won the match for Paultons had he not suffered a last ball mathematical brainstorm. More...

Lymo march on indoors
Lymington survived a last over scare to defeat Paultons by 9 runs to maintain their New Forest Indoor League title challenge.

With Christian Pain suffering a rare failure with the bat and with Simon Naylor unavailable, runs were not easy to come by against an accurate Paultons' bowling attack. And although Bryn Darbyshire (36no), Adie Hunt (22) and Adam Darbyshire (22no) all batted well, the run rate rarely crept above 8 an over. However, the Darbyshire brothers saved the best until last, and the 19 runs they slogged off the final over were to prove crucial as Lymington totalled 113 for 4.

Opener Peter Lamb struck a swift 26no, but some good bowling from Pain and Adam Darbyshire kept a tight reign on the Paultons' reply. Going into the final over Paultons required an improbable 23 runs for victory and two dot balls from Hunt looked to have sealed the win. However Graham Pike then lashed the next two balls for 6 to prompt a few nervous glances at the scoreboard. But Hunt kept his nerve to concede just two more runs as Lymo ran out winners by 9 runs.

Three wins from Lymington's final three matches could seal the title, although two of those matches are against fellow championship hopefuls Bashley and Hythe & Dibden. This Sunday (27th January) Lymo meet Paultons again in the quarter finals of the cup. The match kicks off at 7pm.

Lymington Seconds continued their recent revival with a victory over a youthful Bransgore side. Neil Trestrail rolled back the years with 41no as Lymington scored an impressive 141 for 2 (Scott Tapper 25, Jim Lowe 26no). Bransgore were then restricted to 124 for 4 with Cox scoring 44 and Peter Tapper and Lewis Williams both taking two wickets for Lymo.

PCA top job for ex-Lymington batsman
Former Lymington star Sean Morris has become the new chief executive of the Professional Cricketers Association. Sean, who scored more than 1,800 First Class runs for Hampshire including a career-best 174 against Nottinghamshire, takes over from Richard Bevan who has taken the same role with football's League Managers Association. The PCA - the representative body for past and present first-class cricketers - has also elected Sir Ian Botham as its new President.

Sean Morris joined Lymington in 1988 after scoring five centuries for his Stowe school side. He immediately showed his undoubted class with 149 in a friendly fixture against Lyndhurst, and in 1990 scored a brilliant match-winning 135 against Bournemouth in the Southern League. Sean's family still live locally, and only last season he popped in to the Sports Ground to check on his former club's progress.

Lymo victory sealed with a Kish
Christian ‘Kish’ Pain continued his awesome run of form indoors with an unbeaten half century as Lymington demolished Ringwood in their latest New Forest Indoor League match. Pain was ably assisted by Adie Hunt, Adam Darbyshire and the newly-engaged Simon Naylor, all of whom retired as Lymington totalled 165 for 1. Ringwood were always behind the run rate and were restricted to just 103 with Hunt taking two of the three wickets to fall.

Lymington Seconds recorded an even more convincing victory after smashing 193 against five-man Milford with Trevor Phillips, Neil Trestrail, Peter Tapper and Jim Lowe all retiring on 25 or more. The sorry Seasiders, including former Lymington child prodigy Will Thorp, mustered just 78 in reply.

 Simon finally 'Nayls' his girl!
Simon Naylor's longtime girlfriend Jane received an unexpected Christmas present when Simon finally took the plunge and proposed to her on Christmas Eve.

Ironically for someone who attends at least twenty weddings a year, Nayls has steadfastly refused to make an honest woman of Jane until now. So what brought about the sudden change of heart? Some suggested it was the sherry talking, while some even thought it was maybe down to the rumour that Jane was about to run off with Wobbly Wharton instead. But Simon exclusivey revealed the real reason to www.lymingtoncc.com: "It's simply because I love her. And because there’s a half price sale on at Elizabeth Duke at Argos!"

2008 League fixtures announced

Lymington have been handed a challenging start to the 2008 SPL season with fixtures against last season's top two sides Ventnor and Rowledge. The opening match on May 3rd sees Lymo make the long trip to Rowledge, while a week later reigning champions Ventnor visit the Sports Ground. Lymington then entertain newly promoted Hook & Newnham before travelling to Havant. The long-awaited local derby against New Milton - the first Southern league clash between the two sides since 1999 - takes place at the Sports Ground on June 28th with the reverse fixture at Fernhill ending the season on August 30th. However, the two clubs won't have to wait until late June to face each other as they have been drawn together in the first round of the revamped Southern Electric Cup. All fixtures in this competition will now be played on Sunday afternoons rather than the traditional midweek evenings, although the official SPL website did at least attempt to retain a degree of tradition by stating that the New Milton v Lymington clash would be played at Ashley - a ground that Milton vacated a number of years ago!

The Second XI open their season with away matches at Calmore on May 10th and Bedhampton a week later before playing their first home match against Flamingo on May 24th. They end their league campaign on August 30th with a home encounter with newly promoted local rivals Pylewell Park. The Third XI, meanwhile, host Mudeford in their first fixture on May 10th and then make the short trip to New Milton a week later.

The 2008 Southern Premier League fixtures can be found at www.southernpremierleague.com and Hampshire League fixtures at www.hantscl.co.uk.
