Match Report - First XI - 28th May 05
Sparsholt v Lymington
Southern Electric Premier Cricket League Division 2

Sparsholt 237 for 7 - Lymington 241 for 8 (50 over match )

Lymington won by 2 wickets

On a beautiful sunny but windy day at the picturesque Sparsholt ground near Winchester Adie Hunt won the toss and invited the opposition to bat.

The Lymington opening attack of Australian Peter Smith and Hampshire Under 16 player Lloyd Scott were unable to make any initial breakthrough until the 24th over when Peter Smith (12 overs 1 for 48) came back for his second spell. Trevor Phillips (7 over 0 for 26) back in the first team to add experience bowled tightly but the introduction of young Tom Myatt (8 overs 4 for 34) produced dividends taking another wicket that of Guernsey national player Jeremy Frith (64) and a further 3 wickets in his second spell. Christian Pain (12 overs 0 for 60) and Dorset Under 17 player Sam Wescott ( 5 overs 0 for 27) were unable to claim any victims and Sparsholt after 50 overs finished on 237 f or7.

Peter Smith 132noIn reply Lymington openers Bryn Darbyshire (21) and Martin Hunt (8) started off briskly before the former was unluckily run out having hit 3 fours and 1 six. Adie Hunt (6) and the Aussie batted sensibly and the score moved onto 66 in the 16 th over before the former fell lbw. Matt Molloy (1) was bowled but Christian Pain (15) put on 71 before he was sofly dismissed lobbing up a simple catch. At this stage Lymington required less than 100 off the last 20 overs with the Aussie Smith having been dropped twice starting to ride his luck however wickets fell at the other end and Trevor Phillips(8), Ed Molloy (3) and Lloyd Scott (1) all perished. Lymington were 175 for 7 in the 40 th over staring defeat in the face. However young Sam Westcott (14 not out) gave Smith the necessary support using his feet well to the spinners and Smith having reached his century he then hit 3 sixes finishing on 132 not out a magnificent innings under pressure. Lymington won in the 48 th over and again it must be emphasised the value of Sam Wescott's contribution and support in the final 66 runs to victory

Best of Day Peter Smith 132 not out
