This Saturday sees the first of our monthly draws for the club's 2005 Development Fund. Since its inception in 1995, the Development Fund has raised more than £9000 and has enabled the club to improve facilities at the Sports Ground. The most recent acquisition to be funded by the Development Fund is a mobile practice net which can be seen in the photo below. The net can be moved onto the square to allow batsmen to practice under realistic match conditions. Over the years the Fund has also financed the purchasing of new sightscreens, two new artificial practice wickets, new nets, a water-hog to mop up surface water on the square, covers and furniture for the clubhouse.
Of course, as well as raising vital funds for the development of the club, the Fund has paid out around £3000 in total prize money over the past nine seasons. The Development Fund takes the form of four draws which will take place during the cricket season at the clubhouse on the final Saturday of each month. The prize money for each draw this year is £100, £40 and £10, while the cost of membership of the Development Fund has been capped at a modest £20.
Last year, thanks to the drive and enthusiasm of Adie Hunt we enrolled around 100 members into the Development Fund. This year we hope to match, and if at all possible, better that total. Unfortunately, due to the abysmal weather of the last month, Adie has been unable to get around to seeing everyone to enrol them in this years Fund, so this Saturday the four team captains will be asking players and supporters to sign up and enter the first draw. The fact that 2 members of my family won has absolutely nothing to do with me!!!! said a beaming Adie. Pete Smith is alleged to have drawn the numbers, must have been with the careful supervision of Adie.
