Playing their first competitive match of the season in the Preliminary round of the Cockspur National Club KO Lymington CC had the difficult trip over the water to Ventnor CC champions for the last 2 years of the Southern Electric Premier League Division 2 but unable to get promotion because their ground is not Gold standard as required for Division 1 status. Skipper Adie Hunt won the toss and elected to bat with 1st XI debutantes Dan Wiggins from Alderbury CC and former colt leg-spinner Dan Waters in the mainly youthful side containing veterans Neil Trestrail and Peter Tapper.
Openers Adie Hunt (20) and Simon King (37) made steady progress before the former was out in the 12th over with the score at 36. Neil Trestrail (12), Dan Wiggins (13) and Martin Hunt (9) all got in and were out when they looked set. Christian Pain (43 not out) and Peter Tapper (21) helped the tail wag with the latter launching a huge six almost into the sea. Undefeated Christian Pain held the tail together and Lymington's final total of 179 for 7 was less than expected.
In reply Ventnor lost their 1st wicket at 11 and the 2nd at 36 against the opening attack of Christian Pain (7 overs 0 for 31) and Trevor Phillips (9 overs 1 for 26). Dan Wiggins (7 overs 0 for 49) , Wayne Smith ( 7 overs 2 for 24) who picked up 2 wickets including former Hampshire Youth player Matt Compton who scored 102. and Martin Hunt (5 overs 1 for 41) Ventnor CC coasted home in the 35th over with only 4 wickets down.
