Having last week beaten New Milton, Lymington traveled to Bashley hoping to continue their good start to the season against one of the strongest opponents who boast three U11 teams and 60+ under 11s at training.
Lymington won the toss and asked Bashley to bat. Skipper J Bettle and S Satchwell made a solid start finishing on 212 after their 4 overs. S Morris and H Dathen (11) continued in the same vain but losing a wicket pegged their hard work back meaning 222 after 8 overs. D Eke and R Taylor (15) accelerated and despite each losing a wicket finished their 4 with 243. The final pairing of C Ansty (21) and J Corbett attacked Lymington and with Ansty smashing the ball to all parts the final total of 271 was formidable.
For Lymington all the bowlers did as asked with D Cureton 2 overs 1 wicket for 10, L Ambrose 2 overs 1 wicket for 7 runs and J Cartwright 3 overs 1 wicket for 16 being the wicket takers, J Roberts and A Drodge both bowled economically, and Maher and Moors suffering in final run chase. Debutant F Ambrose belayed his tender year to keep wicket tidily and set a mark for the future.
In reply Lymington didn't panic. K Moors and A Drodge gave Lymo the start the need being 214 after their 4 overs. Next J Cartwright (12) and L Ambrose continued the good work reaching the halfway stage at 231. The perfect position to chase the big total from, unfortunately there was to be a hiccup in the plan. F Ambrose was caught by Skipper J Bettle at point attempting a cut, and tight bowling kept Lymington to only 5 runs off their 4 overs.
Cometh the hour, cometh the man, and needing 36 runs from their 4 overs Skipper D Cureton and J Roberts strode out to the wicket. Facing tight bowling from R Taylor who had conceded 2 runs of his first over Cureton ripped into him with Pietersen esk shots peppering the legside boundary, and forcing Taylor to concede 28 runs off his next 2 overs. Bettle faired slightly, better but good running (although Roberts miss judged one run attempting to give Cureton the strike and lost his wicket.) and fine striking of the ball saw Lymington go past Bashley with the 3rd ball of the last over, and increase the gap to 5 runs at the end of the innings. D Curetons 32 was inspired and followed on from him scoring 100 for his school the day before. His 8 boundaries, and inspired captaincy are the cornerstone around which Lymington U11As hope to build a successful summer campaign.
Bashley were unlucky to come up against a fine player in top form. Their accurate and economical bowlers made Lymington work very hard. S Satchwell 1 over 1 wicket for 2 runs and J Bettle 3 overs 1 wicket for 16 runs were the wicket takers.
Lymington entertain Pylewell Park at home next Sunday.
