Lymington U9s 266 Bashley U9s 220
New Era for Lymington Colts
Having formed an U9 team for the first time, Lymington entertained Bashley in a friendly match at the sports ground. Although Lymington have not fielded an U9 team before, it contained 7 players with U11 experience. Bashley won the toss and asked Lymington to bat. S Laurent struck first taking a wicket with his second ball, made by a fine catch by the wicket keeper, no mean feat at this age level, and he and F Merideth tied C Moor and J Harrison down restricting them to 10 runs from their 4 overs. Bashley were unlucky to lose M Williams to injury early on, but Lymington supplied a replacement fielder in this very friendly atmosphere. The second pairing of C Haining and E Cross resulted in another 6 runs from their 4 overs in the face of good bowling again, setting the scene for J Quigley(12) and Finn Ambrose to accelerate. At 239 Lymington were strongly placed for Skipper Felix Ambrose(15) and J Elliott to set a challenging target and this they did. Closing on 266 after their 16 overs Bashley had bowled well and now needed to bat well to chase this total. The bowling figures for Bashley were S Laurent 3-0-7-1, F Meredith 3-0-9-0, S Scarratt 3-0-16-0, T Silva-Perez 2-0-17-0, O Marshall 2-0-9-1 and A Lock 3-0-12-0.
Bashley's reply was always going to be hard work, and in the face of good tight bowling the first partnership of S Scarratt and O Marshall gave Bash a solid start being 212 at the end of their 4 overs, despite losing 2 wickets. F Meredith(13) scored freely, and with good support from S Laurent continued to build steadily finishing on 228 after their allotted 4 overs. The introduction of C Haining who didn't concede a run and skipper Felix Ambrose put the brakes on, and backed up with excellent fielding kept A Lock and C O'Brian down to 226. With Williams unavailable O Marshall and T Silva Perez came together in the last pairing, only to be met by the youngest, and probably the most accurate of the Lymington bowlers. Finishing with figures of 2-1-4-2 Finn Ambrose certainly made his mark, and proved that bowling straight is the key to success. Finishing on 230 Bashley will look at the loss of wickets, and possible the Lymington fielding being the difference between the 2 sides. The Lymington bowling figures were C Moors 2-0-12-0, J Harrison 3-0-17-2, E Cross 3-0-13-0, J Elliott 2-1-7-0, C Haining 2-2-0-1 Felix Ambrose 2-1-3-0
Hopefully this is the starting point for many years of enjoyable cricket for both teams, and it is a pleasure to watch a good spirited match between to close rivals.
