Around 100 members of Lymington Cricket Club recently gathered at the Masonic Hall to celebrate the most successful season in the history of the club's colts section. Hampshire's Jimmy Adams kindly accepted the club's invitation to present the awards, and the talented opening batsman was a busy man as he was given the task of handing out several dozen cups, shields and trophies. On Friday 22nd of September Lymington Cricket Club launched the Lynx Sports Junior Indoor League. Played in a similar format to the adult version it was the culmination of a lot of hard work and co-operation between Lymington CC, Lymington Recreation centre. The league has four of the forests leading clubs taking part, Bashley, Langley Manor, New Milton and of course Lymington.
It has taken some logistical yoga to squeeze the sessions into the Recreation Centres already busy schedule, but Jerry Rickard the Recreation Centres Manager found a way, and the first hurdle was tackled. Next having got the venue, came the teams, and this proved to be the easy bit. Finally, Hugo Ambrose and his partner Stuart Mckean of Lynx Sports Management stepped forward to sponsor the league, and the last jigsaw piece was in place.
The league has been set up to provide a chance for young cricketers to play their sport during the winter, and allow for their continued development alongside indoor coaching which most of the leagues member clubs currently do. The aim is to introduce a different form of the game, and allow coaches to work with the players during the matches, whilst improving all aspects of their game, and apart from the obvious technical aspects, to provide a semi competitive format that is fun and a healthy activity in a team environment.
The league is played every Friday night, at the Lymington Recreation Centre, between 6pm and 7pm for the Under 11s, and 7pm and 8pm for the Under 13s. Anyone interested is welcome to come along and watch.
Lymington may have written the rules, but New Milton show them how its done.
New Milton batted first and quickly seemed to be in trouble with the early run outs of T Edwards (3) and shortly afterwards W Crossley (4) Undaunted G Watts batted steadily for his (18no), and supported by O Nicolls(8) and L Walls (12) set a target of 78 for 4. For Lymington A Drodge (2-0-14-1) and J Cartwright (2-0-11-1) were the pick of the bowlers.
The Lymington reply lacked urgency, playing lots of non scoring shots, whilst New Milton bowled steadily. Again two quick run outs put Lymington in trouble, and although A Drodge (16) and J Cartwright (12no) seemed to recover the reintroduction of L Watts (2-0-4-0) and T Edwards (3-0-20-1) whose 3rd over only went for four runs despite Lymington trying to accelerate and B Tomkins (2-0-11-0) meant that Lymington ended up 10 runs short.
One aspect of the game that was quite exceptional was the fielding of both sides, without doubt the reason that neither side managed to get any batting bonuses.
Lymington 0 points New Milton 10 points
Because of the set up of this league, matches on any allotted day will feature Under 11s and U13s from the two clubs, hence the following match.
Round Two
Lymington batted and seemed to be in control as first J Roberts (20) retired then O Wiltshire (21) followed his example.
D Cureton(12) tried to continue the good work, but his shots were not really suited to the indoor arena, but with N Elliott(10) finally worked things out, even if it was a little late. the bowlers for New Milton were E Day (2-0-12-1), B Saunders (3-0-27-1) C Taylor (2-0-15-0), A Mills (1-0-17-0) and A Case (2-0-9-0).
Having watched Lymington only start scoring quickly at the end of their innings New Milton were not going to make the same mistake, A Case(21) retired, E Day(25)retired, B Saunders(13), C Taylor(13no) and S Clarke(6no) came home at a canter with nearly 2 overs to spare with sensible running between the wickets. Lymington's only wicket taker was J Roberts (2.1-0-25-1). Lymington were left to rue the lack of urgency in their running, but New Milton were worthy winners.

Lymington's colts section will be celebrating their most successful season ever when they stage their annual presentation evening at the Masonic Hall, Lymington High Street on Friday 29th September. With the Under 11s, 13s and 15s all winning their respective leagues in 2006 there will be plenty of silverware on show. Hampshire's young and talented opening batsman Jimmy Adams will be popping along to present the trophies and will no doubt talk about the amazing 262 not out he scored against Nottinghamshire recently.
Tickets for the event are just £6 (including buffet) and are available from Mark Gannaway on 01590 676973. All club members are welcome to attend the event which kicks off at 7pm. |

Jim Lowe's Under 11A team are celebrating after clinching their New Forest League title yesterday. Their thumping win over Michelmersh & Timsbury not only gave them a 100% record, but also ensured that they went the whole season without dropping a single point. On Friday the team travel to the Rose Bowl where they take on St Cross in the Hampshire Under 11 cup final in a 20 overs a side match which kicks off at 6pm. Jim Lowe's match report

| New Forest Under 11A league champs: Lymington |
Meanwhile, Meg Gannaway faces an anxious wait to see if his Under 11B team have won their league. They went into their last match of the season against bottom-of-the-table side Fawley needing maximum points to ensure the title. Unfortunately Fawley were unable to raise a side, meaning that Lymington could conceivably be pipped for the title in the cruellest of fashions if BAT obtained maximum points in their final fixture.
The Under 13s and 15s have both won their respective divisions and now go into the North v South play-off finals at Wellow on Sunday.
The Under 15s were due to host OTs on Monday night in the New Forest Cup with the winners scheduled to face Hyde in the semi-finals on Wednesday. |

Lymington's hopes of a league and cup cleansweep at all age levels was ended earlier this week when both the Under 11A and Under 13A teams were defeated in their cup quarter finals. Tony Thorp's Under 13s suffered a disastrous batting collapse at BAT and were sent spinning to a 63 run defeat while the 11s came a cropper at Bashley. It was the first time that either team had been beaten this season and although the defeats came as a big disappointment, both sides are still on course to win their relative league titles.
The Under 15s meanwhile are still in with a chance of the double. They are due to meet Wellow in the last eight of the cup and face a top-of-the-table showdown with Langley Manor this Sunday.

Despite the aforementioned cup exits, it has been a quite remarkable season for Lymington's colts section. The Under 11As, 13As and 15s are so far unbeaten in their leagues, while the Under 11Bs have suffered just one defeat all season and are currently top of their division with two matches to play. A very young and inexperienced Under 13B side managed by Jim Lowe (pictured) has made great progress during the summer and won more games than was ever expected. Add to this the growing number of youngsters turning up for training on Monday and Tuesday evenings and it's clear that the future for Lymington Cricket Club looks very bright indeed. |
