Golf Day Winners

The Ninth Lymington Cricket Club Spring Golf Day was held on Wednesday 29th March at Barton on Sea Golf Club. Sponsored by Blue Circle, the event saw thirteen teams gather under clear skies for twenty-seven holes on the fabulous coastal links.

Peter Tapper was confident his handpicked Postcreters team could defend their title and win the event for the third time despite strong competition from right across Hampshire, Dorset and Berkshire.

Nine holes in the morning saw a fast start from several teams including Lombard, The Postcreters, Chandlers Ford Central Club and Lexus Poole. Whilst, Dave Griffiths and his Southampton Rugby Club team were not finding the round ball to their liking and Mark Tracy and his Dunwood Manor team decided to miss lunch and head straight to the practice ground.

The Travis Perkins team responded to the glorious afternoon sunshine by roaring around the Becton Nine and notching up a superb 70 points with former Lymington colt Martin Young contributing 6 pars and 3 birdies in his nine holes. The Postcreters with 69 points and Thorp Motors with 66 points were also challenging strongly. The Stroller nine holes saw the Chandlers Ford Central Club consolidate with 44 points and Tony Jenkin and his Foresters team respond with 40.

Entering the final nine holes, six teams were still in with a chance of winning this prestigious event, and team captains Tony Thorp, Peter Tapper, Tony Jenkin, David Coles, Darren Batty and Mark Figgins were all trying to inspire their teams to greater efforts. The finale saw some fine golf from Mark Prince who, belying his 18 handicap, played the last 5 holes in one under par enabling the Postcreters to post a winning score.

Alan Christie from Lexus Poole showed Phil Mickelson-like skills to win the putting competition, Martin Young unsurprisingly claimed the longest drive and Kim Pilcher, with the very last shot of the day, snatched the nearest the pin prize.

Final Scores

The Postcreters (Peter Tapper ) 175 points
Chandlers Ford Central Club (Darren Batty) 168 points
Thorp Motors (Tony Thorp) 162 points
Bricks & Mortar (Mark Figgins) 161 points
Lombard (David Coles) 160 points

Thanks to all the hole sponsors who made for another very successful day. Enjoyable golf and valuable funds raised of £1,400 which will contribute to the club’s new bowling machine.
