Neutered by the Vets!

LCC Squad

Lymington CC were narrowly defeated by 4 goals to 2 in their annual football match against Lymington Town FC Veterans at the Sports Ground.

The Vets included ex-Bashley FC striker Danny Adams in their line-up, and it was he who tormented the cricketers' back four all evening, notching up a hat-trick including a candidate for goal of the season. Despite the final scoreline, it all started so brightly for the cricket club who took an early lead thanks to Scott Tapper's cool finish from the edge of the box. A period of Vets pressure produced an equaliser from Adams, and the lead was soon extended to 3-1 despite some heroics between the sticks from Wayne Smith. On the stroke of half-time Lymington were gifted an equaliser when a mix-up in the Vets defence allowed Christian Pain to fire the ball into an empty net.

The cricketers' coach pulled off a tactical masterstroke at half-time by substituting himself, and this seemed to work as the lively Bryn Darbyshire began to dominate the midfield and create chances. However, Adams then stunned the small and bedraggled crowd by latching on to a high through ball and brilliantly volleying past substitute goalie Craig Tapper to restore the Vets' two goal advantage. The cricket club searched desperately for way back into the game and were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty for a clumsy challenge on Scott Tapper (what would Bryan Robson have made of that one, Aubrey?!). Darbyshire then fluffed a glorious chance to reduce the deficit before the ref blew the final whistle to end an entertaining encounter.

Thanks are due to Derek Webb for organising the match and to the LTFC catering girls for the great full-time sandwiches.
