On a beautiful warm day on the Isle of Wight at the unique Ventnor ground Lymington lost the toss and Ventnor chose to bat. Eighteen year old Lloyd Scott (7 overs 1 for 56) and Christian Pain (10 overs 1 for 55) opening the bowling with the former making an early breakthrough in the 5th over having one of the openers caught by last years leading Division 2 wicket-keeper Mark Newton. Trevor Phillips (10 overs 2 for 74) then picked up another wicket in the 15th over with the score on 84 but the opposition overseas player Ryan Shutte (96) continued to score freely. Eddie Freeman (6 overs 0 for 53) and debutant leg spinner Ollie Kelly (7 overs 0 for 34) along with Australian Sam Raphael ( 10 overs 1 for 49) were unable to control the flow of runs and Ventnor finished on 332 for 5 after the 50 overs.
In reply Lymington opened with captain Adie Hunt (9) and Ollie Kelly (5) who were soon parted and with Sam Raphael (10), Dan Wiggins (5), Bryn Darbyshire (12), Simon King (7) and Mark Newton (2) all out cheaply Lymington were in trouble at 66 for 7 in the 23rd over. Christian Pain (43) and Trevor Phillips (23) fought a rearguard action and took the score to 135 before the latter was dismissed. Eddie Freeman (8) and Lloyd Scott (0 not out) completed the scoring and with Christian Pain’s dismissal Lymington were all out for 158 in the 42nd over.
Not an encouraging start with only Christian Pain and Trevor Phillips showing any form with the bat, the fielding was excellent with Sam Raphael almost running out a batsman with a direct throw with only one stump to aim at. The bowlers lacked accuracy with 13 wides and 8 no balls effectively over 3 extra overs. Next week the 1st XI are away again to newly promoted Tichborne Park.
