Nat West bank the prizes at Lymington CC Golf Day

The Tenth Lymington Cricket Club Spring Golf day was held on Wednesday 26th March at Barton on Sea Golf Club. Sponsored by Lombard, the event saw eighteen teams gather under clear skies for twenty-seven holes on the fabulous coastal links.

Peter Tapper was confident his hand-picked Postcreters team could defend their title and win the event for the fourth time despite strong competition from right across Hampshire, Dorset and Berkshire. Nine holes in the morning saw a fast start from several teams including The Hunt Goes On, Chandlers Ford Central Club, Keith's Fordball and Forty Plus. Whilst, David Coles' Lombard team were slow off the blocks and Neil Foulkes and his Royal Oldies team decided to skip lunch and head straight to the practice ground.

The afternoon saw the sun shine on the Travis Perkins team as they raced around the Becton Nine with a superb 68 points. The Nat West team also with 68 points and The Royal Youngies with 64 points were also challenging strongly. The Stroller nine holes saw the The Hunt Goes On consolidate with 46 points and Tony Jenkin and his Foresters team respond with 43 points.

The final nine holes saw six teams with a chance of winning this prestigious event; team captains Mark Dancer, Les Browning, Mark Price, Chris Hunt, Martin Hayward and Simon Faul all inspiring their teams to greater efforts. The finale saw some fine golf from Mark Dancer, scoring 22 points on the last nine holes leading the Nat West to a fine winning score of 172 points ahead of Travis Perkins with 166 and The Hunt Goes On a further 2 points behind.

Mike Futter from The Foresters showed Phil Mickelson-like skills to win the putting competition while Neil Foulkes claimed the longest drive and Paul Malone secured the shot of the day in snatching the nearest the pin prize.

Back in the sanctuary of the Barton clubhouse, tournament organiser David Coles thanked all the hole sponsors who had made it another very successful day. All the money raised will go to the further development of facilities at Lymington Cricket Club's Sports Ground headquarters.
