New Forest Colts Cricket Association Cup

Lymington A 112 - 4  New Milton A 61 all out

Denied a chance to play each other in the league this cup fixture between local rivals New Milton and Lymington produced a match that lived up to its expectations, with outstanding cricket all round.

Lymington won the toss and elected to bat first, in what looked like ideal conditions on an excellent wicket at new Milton Cricket Club. The outfield was hard, dry and fast, but so was the wicket and New Milton’s opening bowlers kept the Lymington opening batsmen pinned backed with some excellent fast accurate bowling by G. Watts and C. Taylor. After six overs, Lymington were on just 22 runs although both opening batsmen were still at the crease. A change of bowling in the 7th over was the signal for Lymington to start pushing the run rate and a run out of A. Drodge for 10 runs was the result. However Lymington kept their nerve and after W. Entwisle was clean bowled by T. Edwards for 17 runs F. Ambrose and J. Lewis combined for a punishing innings with J. Lewis scoring 30 off just 17 deliveries before retiring in the 13th over. Not to be outdone F. Ambrose scored 19 runs off the 15th over to reach his 30. Lymington lost two quick wickets in the final overs as they pushed their total and finished with a respectable but not huge total of 112 off 18 overs.

New Milton’s opening batsmen also struggled to score runs off the early overs and as the pressure grew L. Ambrose had both openers out in the fifth over to leave the home side on 13 for 2. A change of bowlers in the 7th over brought no relief as wickets periodically fell and runs proved hard to come by. First change bowlers C. Haining on one wicket for 11 runs off 3 overs and C. Moors with one wicket for 15 runs off four overs kept things tight. In the 9th over A. Hussey and G. Watts combined for a 5th wicket stand of 30 runs with Hussey eventually out in the 15th over for 11 runs, but the runs came too slowly. L. Ambrose returned in the 17th over to bowl G. Watts for 17 runs and finish with 4 wickets for 14 runs off his 4 overs. Fellow opener W. Entwisle returned for the final over and with his first ball had B. Tomkins caught behind after a stunning diving catch by keeper J. Quigley. The two tail enders were both clean bowled in the two consecutive balls to give Entwisle a hat trick and bowling figures of 3 wickets for 5 runs off his 4 overs.
