In the Southern Daily Echo of Friday 03 July Bashley (Rydal) skipper, Andy Neal, said in the match preview that Bashley were up for it, and were determined to avenge their limited overs defeat in the first match of the season. Regrettably the majority of the Lymington players were not in the same frame of mind and put on a lack lustre performance.
Andy Neal won the toss for Bashley and elected to bat. Simon Cook got his usual break through, bowling Neil Thurgood for 5, but the balance of the Bashley top order got their heads down and grafted the makings of a large score. Andy Sexton played a fine innings of 108 before he was run out by Christian Pain. Other batsmen who made their mark included Richie Armstrong (45), Chris Jones (29), Nick Baker (25) and Gavin Bailiff (17*). The best of the Lymington bowlers was Glyn Treagus with 3-54.
In reply Lymington made a disastrous start and the only player in the first five to reach double figures was Morgan Rushbrook (15). Christian Pain (17) and Simon Cook (22) improved the situation somewhat, but both had gone with the home team's total a mere 76-7. Fortunately Cameron Grierson (16) and Tommy Barton carried on where they had left off last Saturday and put on 70 runs for the 8th wicket. Tommy played an excellent innings of 56 which included 2 sixes and 9 fours. The last two Lymington wickets fell with no more than an over to go at 7.27pm when it was hoped that they might hold out for a draw, but this was not to be. All six bowlers that Bashley used took either one or two wickets with Kevin Nash being both the best and unluckiest. He had taken 2-4 in 4.2 overs when he was hit on the leg from a fierce drive by Morgan Rushbrook and had to be helped off the field to take no further part in the match.
With two limited overs cup matches against Bashley (Rydal) this weekend, Lymington will need to sort themselves out both mentally and physically if they are to give themselves any chance of winning. The two matches concerned are the Final of the NFCCA President's Challenge Trophy (18 overs) at Langley Manor on Friday 10 July at 6.15pm and the Quarter Final of the Southern Electric Twenty20 Cup at Bashley 3pm on Sunday 12 July.
